物质性并不是一种先验的给定,而是在与他者关系中得以体现的。媒介物质性更是如此,媒介物质性与“非物质性”的“媒介表征”是一种相依的关系,孤立地谈其一,则极易走向“空洞无物”与“物的空洞”。芭拉德强调物质与非物质纠缠的“展演论”,则是在关系视角之下,为媒介物质性研究提供了一条可能性的进路。展演意味着媒介物质性与媒介的非物质性都不是一种既定的存在,媒介物质性让非物质性的“媒介表征”的生产成为可能,而“媒介表征”的生产又重新划定了一种新的物质性现实,两者在交错展演之中,生成了我们当下的传播现实。这一进路,展现了媒介物质性是如何在与媒介表征的纠缠中,将传播“物质化”的过程,由此打开了媒介物质性的黑箱,而理解传播,实际上也是理解在传播的生成过程中,物质性与非物质性之间的展演互动。
