数字革命以来,公民新闻承载了诸如虚拟民主、新闻变革、社会平权等一系列期待。文章回顾了近年来欧美学者对上述理想化期待的反思,总结出公民新闻存在的问题及原因,即公民新闻质量参差不齐,其生产和消费均非人人参与的理想形态;公民新闻的内容与新闻专业主义传统难以相容,导致新闻业对用户生产内容的有限使用格局;公民新闻理想化源自于技术中心主义思想,忽略了技术传播中新闻体制、政治体制和经济体制的作用。
